Spring Safety & Property Maintenance Reminder
As we transition into spring residents are reminded to inspect their properties for seasonal hazards and maintenance issues in accordance with the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code and the New York State Property Maintenance Code.
Spring thaw and wet weather can create unsafe conditions. Please take time to:
  • Inspect roofs, gutters, and downspouts for winter damage and ensure proper drainage away from foundations.
  • Check basements and crawl spaces for water intrusion or mold concerns.
  • Remove yard debris, fallen limbs, and trash that may create fire or pest hazards.
  • Maintain lawns and vegetation to prevent overgrowth and rodent harborage.
  • Inspect decks, porches, and stairs for loose railings or structural deterioration.
  • Ensure sump pumps discharge properly and do not create drainage issues on neighboring properties.
  • Obtain required permits before beginning spring construction projects such as decks, sheds, fences, pools, or renovations.
Property maintenance is a shared responsibility that protects public safety, neighborhood appearance, and property values. Addressing minor concerns early helps prevent larger, more costly issues later in the season.
For questions regarding permits, inspections, or compliance requirements, please contact the Code Enforcement Office.
Stay safe and enjoy the spring season responsibly.

Ice Damming: What Homeowners Should Know
Ice damming occurs when snow on a roof melt from heat escaping the home, then refreezes at the colder eaves. Over time, this ice buildup traps water, forcing it under shingles and into the home, where it can damage roofs, insulation, walls, and ceilings.
How to Prevent Ice Dams
  • Improve attic insulation and air sealing to keep heat inside the living space and off the roof.
  • Ensure proper attic ventilation so roof temperatures remain consistent.
  • Keep gutters and downspouts clear so melting snow can drain freely.
  • Safely remove excess snow from the roof after heavy storms using a roof rake (from the ground).
If Ice Dams Have Formed
  • Do not chip ice with tools or use open flames—this can damage the roof and create safety hazards.
  • Consider professional ice dam removal using steam or low-pressure methods.
  • Address interior leaks promptly to prevent mold and structural damage.
Taking preventive steps early in the season is the most effective way to avoid ice damming and protect your home from costly winter damage. If problems persist year after year, homeowners are encouraged to consult a qualified contractor for a long-term solution.
